Supreme Court of Ohio

Program Requirements & Timeline

Meetings

Participants complete nine hours of mentoring during the course of six in-person meetings. The new lawyer and mentor should schedule these meetings at times and places most convenient for them. Some new lawyers and mentors find it easiest to schedule meetings that include breakfast or lunch rather than always meeting at an office setting.

Length of Mentoring Term

The mentoring term lasts approximately one year.

New Lawyer Training and CLE Credit

New lawyers who successfully complete Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring will fulfill their new lawyer training requirement, provided that they also receive three hours of classroom instruction on professionalism, office management, and client fund management, which is required of all new attorneys. Mentors will receive 12 hours of CLE credit, which includes one hour of professionalism, one hour of ethics, and one-half hour of substance abuse. There is no cost to mentors or new lawyers who participate.

Activities and Discussions

Participants must complete all activities selected as a part of their Mentoring Plan. Because the mentors’ award of CLE credit includes one-half hour of substance abuse education, participants are required to have a discussion about substance abuse and mental health issues.

Submissions

Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring does not require any journaling or submission of written work. However, the following must be completed by all participants:

  1. New Lawyer Application or Mentor Application
  2. Mentoring Agreement
  3. Mentoring Plan
  4. Mid-term and End of Year Surveys
  5. Certificate of Satisfactory Completion

Orientation

To be most effective in their new role, mentors receive training at a mentor orientation. Mentors are strongly encouraged to attend this in person and will receive additional CLE credit for their attendance. In the alternative, mentors may view the orientation program online. New lawyers are sent an orientation packet to review and are asked to watch a brief online message from the Supreme Court of Ohio’s Chief Justice.

Implementation Plan

The Implementation Plan explains in great detail how the program will operate and serves as the program rules. Participants are not required to read this plan, as the orientation program and materials will explain how the program works.
