Justice Kennedy Swears In Buckeye Boys State Elected Officials

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon L. Kennedy swore in the newly elected 2015 Buckeye Boys State officers at the annual ceremony held at Bowling Green State University on Wednesday, June 17, 2015.

The American Legion Buckeye Boys State is a leadership program designed to educate high school students about the rights and responsibilities of citizens within the city and state government structure.

Justice Kennedy administered the oath of office to the new Buckeye Boys State lieutenant governor, treasurer, secretary of state, auditor, attorney general, chief justice, associate justices, and judges of the court of appeals and court of claims.

“As you have been elected, be mindful of your obligations to the people,” she admonished. “To accord them the full duty and responsibility of the position you are sworn to uphold.”

She also cautioned them to act within their powers: “Ask yourself: Do I have the authority and should I? Is it for the glory of myself or the people I serve?”

Justice Kennedy took additional time to thank the American Legion, not only for serving their country, but for their continuous efforts on behalf of service members, and for their contribution to young people.

“Thank you for helping these young men … understand and attain keener insight into the role of government in their lives … and for instilling in them your commitment to God and Country,” she said.

Justice Kennedy is serving her second term on the Supreme Court of Ohio. Prior to joining the Supreme Court, Justice Kennedy served on the Butler County Court of Common Pleas, Domestic Relations Division from 1999 to 2012. She served as the administrative judge there from 2005 until December 2012. Justice Kennedy began her career in the justice system as a police officer in Hamilton, Ohio. She received her law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law.
