Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Maureen O’Connor offered practical advice April 11 for prosecuting attorneys practicing before the Supreme Court at the spring training conference of the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association. Her presentation included tips on what to consider before filing a jurisdictional memo as well as what to expect and how to prepare for an oral argument before the court.
“Admittedly, arguing before the Supreme Court for the first time can make for some anxious moments for prosecuting attorneys,” said Justice O’Connor. “Equally as important, however, is information on following the proper procedures before a case reaches the oral argument phase. I hope today’s discussion helped to put Ohio’s prosecuting attorneys at ease.”
The Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association is a private non-profit membership organization that was founded in 1937 for the benefit of the state’s 88 elected county prosecutors.
Justice O’Connor was elected in 2002 as the 148th Justice on the Supreme Court of Ohio and the seventh woman to serve on the Court. She has experience as a practicing attorney, magistrate, common pleas judge, and prosecuting attorney. In 1998, she was elected as lieutenant governor and was the governor's chief advisor on criminal justice issues, serving as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and as chair of Ohio’s Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee.
