Justice O’Connor Meets With Metro High School Students

Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Maureen O’Connor met April 8 with about 70 students from the Metro High School and gave them an overview of the Court, the judicial process and her role on the Court.

“Sometimes students don’t realize the impact the judiciary has on their everyday lives,” said Justice O’Connor. “When I talk with students I try to emphasize the importance of the third branch of government and how it fits in with the executive and legislative branches.”

Operated by the Educational Council – a confederation of the 16 public school districts in Franklin County – Metro School is open to and serves Franklin County students who want a personalized learning experience that fosters critical thinking, creativity and communication and emphasizes how math, science and technology shape our world.

Justice O’Connor was elected in 2002 as the 148th Justice on the Supreme Court of Ohio and the seventh woman to serve on the Court. She has experience as a practicing attorney, magistrate, common pleas judge, and prosecuting attorney. In 1998, she was elected as lieutenant governor and was the governor's chief advisor on criminal justice issues, serving as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and as chair of Ohio’s Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee.
