Justice O'Connor Addresses Medical Society Membership

Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Maureen O’Connor participated in a panel discussion and spoke April 10 at the Stark County Medical Society general membership meeting. Her remarks offered “A View from the Bench” and focused on the relationship between the Court and the legislature.

“A system such as ours, with three co-equal branches of government, offers very interesting dynamics,” said Justice O’Connor. “The court acts as a check and balance to the other two branches. The legislature can, and often does, enact statutes in direct response to case law from the Supreme Court.”

About 100 people attended the monthly meeting for physicians at Walsh University including Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton. The medical society serves its members by acting as a strong physician advocate, providing services that meet the professional needs and interests of the physician community and taking a leadership role in informing the community about health issues.

Justice O’Connor was elected in 2002 as the 148th Justice on the Supreme Court of Ohio and the seventh woman to serve on the Court. She has experience as a practicing attorney, magistrate, common pleas judge, and prosecuting attorney. In 1998, she was elected as lieutenant governor and was the governor's chief advisor on criminal justice issues, serving as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and as chair of Ohio’s Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee.
