Justice O’Connor Speaks at Girl Scout Conference

Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Maureen O’Connor honored the top scouts of the Seal of Ohio Girl Scout Council April 24 at the group’s annual leadership conference and recognition luncheon at COSI. About 300 scouts and family members attended.

“Girl Scouting is a program dedicated to helping girls to develop into young women,” said Justice O’Connor. “The experiences build self-confidence and help scouts envision their future.”

Girl Scouts is open to girls ages 5 to 17. As members, girls build strong self-esteem and learn globally marketable skills such as financial literacy and budgeting, teamwork and consensus building. The 17-county Seal of Ohio Council served 24,000 girls and 7,000 adult volunteers in 2006.

Justice O’Connor was elected in 2002 as the 148th Justice on the Supreme Court of Ohio and the seventh woman to serve on the Court. She has experience as a practicing attorney, magistrate, common pleas judge, and prosecuting attorney. In 1998, she was elected as lieutenant governor and was the governor's chief advisor on criminal justice issues, serving as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and as chair of Ohio’s Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee.
