Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Maureen O’Connor spoke at the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association’s Appellate Court Committee Spring Seminar Thursday, June 5, at the Eighth District Court of Appeals. Her luncheon remarks centered on the specialization of attorneys as appellate practitioners.
“I appreciate the opportunity to share my perspective on the important topic of appellate practice, including the importance of good preparation and persuasive and effective oral arguments,” Justice O’Connor said.
In addition to Justice O’Connor’s luncheon speech that kicks off the annual seminar, the half-day session also included various continuing legal education presentations such as the role of staff attorneys and appellate motion practice, settlement/mediation conferences and tips for briefing and arguing before the Eighth District appellate court. The day concluded with a tour of the court and the Cuyahoga County Courthouse.
Justice O’Connor was elected in 2002 as the 148th Justice on the Supreme Court of Ohio and the seventh woman to serve on the Court. She has experience as a practicing attorney, magistrate, common pleas judge, and prosecuting attorney. In 1998, she was elected as lieutenant governor and was the governor's chief advisor on criminal justice issues, serving as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and as chair of Ohio’s Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee.
