Justice O’Connor Meets with Boy Scouts

Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Maureen O’Connor welcomed members of the Boy Scouts to the Ohio Judicial Center Feb. 20. Justice O’Connor spoke to the Scouts about the role of the judiciary.

“The Scouts ranged from 6 years old to a 14-year-old Eagle Scout. Each Scout was interested in the Court and asked very good questions,” Justice O’Connor said. “They were in awe of the beautiful Court building and enjoyed the murals that depict events in Ohio history. I think it’s so important for all young people to understand the judicial branch of our government, and I enjoyed playing a part in helping them to understand what the Supreme Court does.”

The seven Scouts and their leaders represented troops from across Ohio, and their visit to Columbus included a stop at the Statehouse.

Justice O’Connor was elected in 2002 as the 148th Justice on the Supreme Court of Ohio and the seventh woman to serve on the Court. She has experience as a practicing attorney, magistrate, common pleas judge, and prosecuting attorney. In 1998, she was elected as lieutenant governor and was the governor’s chief advisor on criminal justice issues, serving as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and as chair of Ohio’s Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee.
