Local Students Get Behind-the-Scenes Look at Supreme Court

Justice Robert R. Cupp addresses students from Hardin County.Honor students from four Hardin County schools got a first-hand look at the Supreme Court of Ohio this week.

The 50 seniors from Hardin Northern, Ridgemont, Riverdale and Upper Scioto Valley high schools on Wednesday, Dec. 12, toured the Ohio Judicial Center and watched as Justices heard oral arguments. Afterward, Justice Robert R. Cupp talked to the students about the Court's procedure for reaching decisions.

“The students had a rare opportunity to see the judicial branch of government in action, bringing what they learn in the classroom and from text books to life,” Justice Cupp said. “I commend them and their teachers for their interest in learning how our court system works.”

Justice Cupp is serving his first term on the Supreme Court of Ohio. Previously he was a judge on the Ohio Third District Court of Appeals and a State Senator from Allen County, a position he held for 16 years. Before being elected to the legislature, Justice Cupp was a Lima City Prosecutor and assistant director of law as well as an Allen County commissioner. He earned his political science degree from Ohio Northern University in 1973 and his law degree from Ohio Northern's Pettit College of Law in 1976.
