Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Robert R. Cupp addressed nearly 150 4-H teen leaders July 24 at the annual State 4-H Leadership Camp in St. Louisville, Ohio.
Justice Cupp spoke to campers during a leadership assembly, joined them for lunch and met one-on-one with a select group during a break-out session.
The week-long camp offers a challenging “learn-by-doing” leadership development experience for 4-H members from across Ohio. Leadership campers plan, conduct and evaluate the program themselves. One of the camp’s objectives centers on sharing ideas and methods that campers can use to strengthen their local programs. Campers also hear from top government officials and business, education and civic leaders about their leadership principles.
In his remarks, Justice Cupp encouraged Ohio’s youth that are interested in civic leadership to become involved in political campaigns, to run for elected office and to serve as leaders for civic organizations in their communities. “4-H represents one of the best training grounds for youth interested in improving their communities, their state and their nation,” said Justice Cupp. “I’m excited to visit with some of Ohio’s future leaders.”
Justice Cupp is serving his first term on the Supreme Court. An Allen County native, he was a judge on the Ohio Third District Court of Appeals and a state senator for seven counties in west-central Ohio, a position he held for 16 years. Before being elected to the legislature, Justice Cupp was a Lima city prosecutor and assistant director of law as well as an Allen County commissioner. He earned his political science degree from Ohio Northern University in 1973 and his law degree from Ohio Northern’s Pettit College of Law in 1976.
