Born in rural Allen County and raised on his family's farm, Justice Robert Cupp is often reminded of his rural roots. The State 4-H Alumni Award winner has maintained a connection to the 4-H program over the years and most recently spent some time in St. Louisville, Ohio with about 130 campers for the 4-H Leadership Camp. Justice Cupp was the featured luncheon speaker and participated in several afternoon sessions.
The state 4-H Leadership Camp is a learn-by-doing leadership development experience for 4-H teen leaders age 14 and older. The campers plan, conduct, and evaluate most of the activities in each day's program themselves. Other Leadership Camp experiences include opportunities to interact with adult leaders from business, government, civic and professional groups; activities focus on the camp theme (this year's theme was Live to Challenge); and session options include leadership skills, local and county programs and ideas, cultural heritage and citizenship, communications, careers, and personal development.
Earlier this year, Justice Cupp visited Putnam County and its Continental Lucky Stars 4-H Club. The visit was a nostalgic one for Justice Cupp, who was presented with a project book dating from his days with the 1968 Putnam County Aviation 4-H Club and asked to autograph it. The club was entering the project book in its archives.
“This was a first for me,” Justice Cupp said of being asked for his autograph. “I enjoyed meeting the club members and discussing my 4-H days.”
Justice Cupp also was an 8-year member of the Columbus Grove Livestock 4-H Club as a youth and shared his memories with the club members. He also used the occasion to talk about the judicial system in Ohio, and the Continental Lucky Stars were a willing audience, he noted.
“We talked about trial courts, appellate courts and the role and importance of the Supreme Court in deciding cases,” Justice Cupp said. “I also discussed how the Court prepares for oral arguments, what happens at oral arguments and how it is decided who will write the opinion. The students asked if it was difficult to decide cases, how security is kept, and when judges must recuse themselves from cases.”For a high-resolution, publication-quality photo of Justice Cupp and the participants in the state 4-H Leadership Camp, please click on the above photo or visit: http://www.supremecourtofohio.gov/Justices/cupp/news/images/4Hlouisville_highres.zip.
