Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger gave remarks on Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Diocese of Toledo Red Mass Program at Our Lady Most Holy Rosary Cathedral on Collingwood Boulevard in Toledo. The mass was the first ever Red Mass for the diocese.
The Red Mass can be traced back to 12th century Europe and has long been an annual event in many cities around the United States. Attended by judges, lawyers and law students of many faiths, it is traditionally celebrated at the beginning of a new court term to invoke blessings and guidance for those in the legal community. The name is derived from the traditional red vestments worn by the celebrants of the mass.
“Now and then it's important for those of us in the legal profession to reflect on the primary values that motivate our lives,” said Justice Lanzinger, whose remarks touched on how ‘those in the profession may do good, while at the same time, doing well.' “I'm grateful to be able to share in this special event with lawyers and judges from throughout Northwest Ohio.”
Judicial officers and bar association members from throughout 19 northwest Ohio counties attended the mass, which was led by Bishop Leonard P. Blair of the Diocese of Toledo.
“Through her experience as a practicing lawyer and sitting judge in Northwest Ohio and now statewide, Justice Lanzinger has recognized the responsibility and opportunity of lawyers and judges to promote justice in their communities. We are honored to have Justice Lanzinger attend the Red Mass and present the keynote address,” said attorney Thomas P. Dillon, of the law firm Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, who was among the event's organizers. The mass was followed by a dinner and program.
Justice Lanzinger was elected in 2004 as the 150th Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio and previously served on the 6th District Court of Appeals for Ohio, the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas and the Toledo Municipal Court. She received her undergraduate degree and her law degree from the University of Toledo.
