Children’s Summit to Focus on Improving Services
With goals of enhancing the safety, well-being and permanent home environments of Ohio children, the first Ohio Summit on Children will take place on Thursday, May 1, and Friday, May 2, at the Hyatt Regency Columbus.
Co-chaired by Gov. Ted Strickland and Supreme Court of Ohio Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer, the Summit will bring together five-member county teams to assess local and state strengths and challenges, identify service gaps and develop local plans for improvement in delivering services to Ohio’s children. Local juvenile court judges and directors of county children services or jobs and family services agencies will serve as team leaders.
The agenda for the two-day Summit includes:
THURSDAY, MAY 1
- 10 a.m. – Welcome and overview from moderator David Lieberth
- 10:15 a.m. – Charge to county teams from Gov. Strickland and Chief Justice Moyer
- 10:45 a.m. – Introductions of county team members
- 10:45 a.m. – MEDIA AVAILABILITY featuring Gov. Strickland, Chief Justice Moyer, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Director Helen Jones-Kelley, Supreme Court Administrative Director Steve Hollon, Lorain County Domestic Relations/Juvenile Court Judge David Basinski and former foster child Cedric Riley
- 11 a.m. – Voices of Ohio Children video – foster youth share their experiences
- 11:15 a.m. – Keynote address by former foster child Cedric Riley
- 12:25 p.m. – Luncheon remarks giving a national perspective on children’s issues by Joan Ohl, Commissioner, Administration for Children, Youth and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
- 12:45 p.m. – State perspective on children’s issues by Director Jones-Kelley
- 1 p.m. – Local perspective on children’s issues by Judge Basinski
- 1:30 p.m. – Voices of Ohio Communities video about local perspectives
- 1:45 p.m. – Initial assessment of county strengths and challenges
- 2:30 p.m. – Quiz for county teams about what they know about Ohio’s children
- 3:15 p.m. – Discussion centered on county data profiles
- 3:45 p.m. – Local collaborative program video presentation
- 4:15 p.m. – Successful local collaborative programs share information
- 7 p.m. – Dinner remarks by The Honorable William Byars Jr., director of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice
FRIDAY, MAY 2
- 8:30 a.m. – Moderator reviews themes of day one
- 9 a.m. – Teams identify top two or three children’s issues
- 10:15 a.m. – Collaborative planning by teams centered on priority issue
- 12:30 p.m. – LUNCHEON ADDRESS by Ohio State University Head Football Coach Jim Tressel on benefits of teamwork
- 1 p.m. – County teams plan next steps
- 1:45 p.m. – County teams report to state officials what state can do to help
- 2:15 p.m. – Administrative Director Hollon leads discussion on next steps for county teams
- 2:45 p.m. – MEDIA AVAILABILITY featuring Gov. Strickland, Chief Justice Moyer, Director Jones-Kelley, Administrative Director Hollon, Judge Basinski and Cedric Riley
Members of the media planning to attend the media availability sessions are asked to check in at the media registration table outside the Hyatt Regency Ballroom on the third floor. The table will be staffed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.
