Supreme Court Announces Cases to be Heard in Shelby County Session

Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer has identified the four cases that will be heard by the Supreme Court of Ohio in Shelby County on Oct. 15. The Court’s visit is part of the semiannual Off-Site Court program.

The cases are: State v. Goldsberry, Case No. 2007-2182 (Union County); State v. Peterson, Case No. 2007-2232 (Montgomery County); In Re: J.F., Case No. 2007-2239 (Greene County); and State v. Hoover, Case No. 2007-2285 (Union County).

Chief Justice Moyer said the four cases were selected specifically because of their subject matter and/or proximity to Shelby County. “We attempt to schedule cases on Off-Site Court days that have local or regional ties or that deal in legal concepts with which students can relate or have learned about through their government classes,” he said.

Oral arguments will be heard by the seven Justices of the Supreme Court at 9 a.m. at the Shelby County Courthouse, 100 E. Court St., Sidney. The Court includes Chief Justice Moyer and Justices Paul E. Pfeifer, Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, Maureen O’Connor, Terrence O’Donnell, Judith Ann Lanzinger and Robert R. Cupp.

The Off-Site Court program, initiated by Chief Justice Moyer in 1987, has gained national recognition as a model program for education about the judiciary. The program enhances students’ understanding of the legal system by providing an opportunity for them to attend and observe the proceedings of the Supreme Court in person and to interact with Justices, attorneys and Court staff.

High school students from throughout Shelby County will participate from the following schools: Anna High School, Botkins High School, Christian Academy High School, Fairlawn High School, Fort Loramie High School, Houston High School, Jackson Center High School, Upper Valley Joint Vocational School, Lehman High School, Russia High School and Sidney High School.

Students and teachers will study curriculum material in advance of the session, including summaries of the specific cases to be argued. Local attorneys will team with educators at each participating school to explain Ohio’s judicial system and review the case materials. On the morning of Oct. 15, a select group of students will attend a special briefing during which they may ask questions and interact with Justices of the Court.

Students from each participating school will be assigned to attend one of the oral arguments. After their assigned case has been argued, each group will meet with the case attorneys for a debriefing and discussion of the legal issues in the argument they just heard.

Documents filed with the Supreme Court for each case can be accessed via the Supreme Court’s Web site at http://www.supremecourtofohio.gov.
