Under changes announced today by the Supreme Court of Ohio, new lawyers will have a wider range of options to fulfill their new lawyer requirements.
The amendments to Rule X Continuing Legal Education of the Rules for the Government of the Bar of Ohio will take effect Nov. 1.
The new amendments still will require attorneys to earn 12 hours of new lawyer instruction. However, attorneys no longer will be required to earn their 12 hours only by attending the standard two-day program. Instead, new attorneys will be able to earn their 12 hours over the course of their reporting period, similar to how other attorneys earn their CLE hours.
The new rule will affect attorneys admitted to the practice of law by examination as well as attorneys registered for corporate status on or after Nov. 1. Attorneys admitted to the practice of law or registered for corporate status before Nov. 1 will not be affected by the new amendments and must comply with the rule currently in place.
