Justice O’Connor Hosts Leadership Medina County

A full day’s activities for a local leadership group visiting the state capital today culminated in a discussion with Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Maureen O’Connor and a tour of the Ohio Judicial Center.

Leadership Medina County prepares and engages individuals for community leadership roles in Medina County through education, leadership skill development and relationship building. The group meets one day per month for nine months and includes a visit to Columbus. This year’s class numbers about 40 participants.

“For those unaccustomed to how state government works, a trip to Columbus to meet with state leaders can be quite an education,” said Justice O’Connor. “Not only can you get a feel for how legislation impacts your home county, but you have a chance to learn from and ask questions of leaders making tough decisions at the state level.”

In addition to the visit with Justice O’Connor, the group met with State Auditor Mary Taylor, ate lunch with State Rep. Bill Batchelder, State Rep. Bob Gibbs and State Sen. Ron Amstutz, attended committee hearings and general sessions of the House and State and met with lobbyists.

Justice O’Connor was elected in 2002 as the 148th Justice on the Supreme Court of Ohio and the seventh woman to serve on the Court. She has experience as a practicing attorney, magistrate, common pleas judge, and prosecuting attorney. In 1998, she was elected as lieutenant governor and was the governor's chief advisor on criminal justice issues, serving as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and as chair of Ohio’s Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee.
