Supreme Court Announces Judicial College Courses

The Supreme Court of Ohio today announced the schedule of Judicial College courses for August, September and October for judges, magistrates, acting judges, court personnel and judicial candidates.

On Aug. 22 in Cincinnati and on Oct. 17 in Columbus, the Judicial College and Interpreter Services Section will partner on a course in the New Americans Series. This course will focus on China and cover basic points on the culture and history of China, discuss immigration trends in Ohio, present resources for court personnel using interpreters in the courts and review the new Supreme Court handbook, “Interpreters in the Judicial System.” The New Americans Series was conceived to introduce court personnel and judicial officers to the significant cultural groups in Ohio.

The Judicial College will present an Adult Probation Officer Academy in September and October at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy in London. The probation academy was designed by members of the Ohio Chief Probation Officers Association for adult county probation officers with less than one year of experience from departments who do not have in-house orientation programs. The program includes firearms qualification, unarmed self-defense training and classroom sessions on various probation-related topics.

To view a complete listing of the most up-to-date course calendar, dates and locations for courses available for these three months and for the remainder of 2008, visit the Judicial College Web site at: http://www.supremecourtofohio.gov/judcoll/default.asp.

Created in 1976 and governed by Gov. Jud. R. V, the Judicial College was established to provide educational programs and activities for Ohio judges. In 1988, the program was expanded to include court referees and magistrates, and in 1990 the college began to provide programs for non-judicial court personnel throughout the state.

“With rules that require a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education for the 721 judges in Ohio every two years and 24 hours for the 798 magistrates, there’s a lot of training delivered in the state,” said Judicial College Director W. Milt Nuzum III. “We take great pride in the fact that 62 percent of the total continuing education Ohio judges reported in 2007 came through the Judicial College.”
