Supreme Court Announces Summer Judicial College Courses

The Supreme Court of Ohio today announced its summer Judicial College schedule of courses for judges, magistrates, acting judges, court personnel and judicial candidates.

A sampling of the courses for July, August and September includes: an update on delinquency and unruly case law for magistrates and judges in July; a course in August that will highlight Chinese immigrants’ cultural differences in communication, legal concepts and customs; and a September course for adult and juvenile probation officers on trends, terminology, paraphernalia and physiological effects of narcotics.

In addition, a “Science in the Courts” course for judges will be offered in July. The course will examine the role of judges as gatekeepers of the admissibility of scientific evidence where the testimony of experts is critical to the outcome of cases and information on the science of addictive disorders and how the brain relates to behavior.

Created in 1976 and governed by Gov. Jud. R. V, the Judicial College was established to provide educational programs and activities for Ohio judges. In 1988, the program was expanded to include court referees and magistrates, and in 1990 the college began to provide programs for non-judicial court personnel throughout the state.

“With rules that require a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education for the 721 judges in Ohio every two years and 24 hours for the 798 magistrates, there’s a lot of training delivered in the state,” said Judicial College Director W. Milt Nuzum III. “We take great pride in the fact that 62 percent of the total continuing education Ohio judges reported in 2007 came through the Judicial College.”
