Montgomery County resident Tim Gorman will lead the Advisory Committee on the Judicial Family Network as chairman for 2008-09, the Supreme Court of Ohio announced today. He replaces Shannon Nelson whose one-year term as chair is ending.
The 18-member committee identifies the needs and concerns of judicial families in Ohio and offers both educational opportunities and a supportive network to those families. Ohio currently has 721 judges at all levels of the judiciary. The committee was founded in 2000 by Mary Moyer, wife of Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer, after her work with the Judicial Family Institute. The institute, which is affiliated with the national Conference of Chief Justices, focuses on the challenges of public life for judicial families.
“When Barbara took the bench, even though we were familiar with the courthouse, we still had questions and concerns starting judicial family life with three young children and nowhere to go for answers,” said Gorman, the husband of Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Barbara Gorman. “Now, thanks to Mary Moyer at the Ohio Judicial Family Network, there is an organization dedicated to helping new and experienced judicial families with their questions and concerns.”
Mr. Gorman has served on the Ohio Judicial Family Network since 2002, was previously the committee’s vice chair and served as chair of the judicial family programs subcommittee. He serves as vice mayor of the city of Clayton and has been a member of council since the city was established in 1998. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Marquette University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Dayton. Since 1972, Mr. Gorman has worked for the John M. Gorman Co., a supplier to the tool and die industry.
Serving the court’s general division as a judge since 1987, Judge Gorman also serves as presiding judge and previously served as administrative judge for the court. She is a member and past president of the Ohio Common Pleas Judges Association and serves on the advisory board of the University of Dayton School of Law. Before her ascension to the bench, Judge Gorman served as a Montgomery County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney from 1977 to 1987.
Tim and Judge Gorman live in Clayton with their three grown children.
