New Attorneys to be Admitted to the Bar in Ceremonies at Ohio Theatre Monday

Sessions can be viewed live online at Supreme Court's Web site, Ohio Channel

Nearly 1,000 new attorneys will be sworn in Monday, Nov. 17, during two special public sessions of the Supreme Court of Ohio at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the historic Ohio Theatre, 39 E. State St.

The 10:30 a.m. session is for law school graduates of Capital University, University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton, Northern Kentucky University and The Ohio State University; and the 2 p.m. session is for graduates of University of Akron, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Ohio Northern University, University of Toledo and out-of-state schools.

Supreme Court Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger will serve as the keynote speaker at both ceremonies, and Justice Terrence O’Donnell will lead the new attorneys in the professional oath.

The oath of office sessions will be broadcast live on the Internet on the Supreme Court’s Web site (www.supremecourtofohio.gov) as well as the Ohio Channel (www.ohiochannel.org). In addition, the sessions will be available statewide on the Ohio Channel’s local public broadcasting stations, which reach more than 4 million homes. The sessions will air on the Ohio Channel from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25 and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12 and Sunday, Dec. 14.

The attorneys being sworn in passed the July 2008 bar examination and satisfied all of the Supreme Court’s other requirements for admission. Out of the 1,206 applicants who sat for the exam, 1,016 (84.3 percent) received passing scores; out of 1,093 first-time applicants, 88.8 percent received passing scores. Capital University (94 percent) had the highest passing rate for first-time applicants.

Following the ceremony, new attorneys may visit the Ohio Judicial Center, including the Supreme Court Courtroom and the Law Library. In addition, staff from the Office of Attorney Services will be available in the Grand Concourse to help new attorneys register.
