O'Donnell Delivers Commencement Address, Receives Honorary Doctor of Law Degree

Justice Terrence O'Donnell of the Supreme Court of Ohio traveled to Akron today to speak at the 82nd annual University of Akron School of Law commencement ceremony.

In his keynote address, Justice O'Donnell spoke to the graduates about the importance of upholding the law and preserving its dignity.

During the ceremony, Akron University president Luis Proenza presented Justice O'Donnell with an honorary doctor of law degree in recognition of his distinguished law career.

Also honored at this year's commencement ceremony was community philanthropist Beatrice Knapp McDowell, a major benefactor to the law school.

“It is a very special honor to present the commencement address at the University of Akron Law School and to share graduation day with Mrs. Beatrice Knapp McDowell and the graduates of the law school who will soon be admitted to the practice of law in the State of Ohio,” Justice O'Donnell said.

Justice O'Donnell was appointed to the Court in May 2003, and has been a member of the state judiciary for more than 25 years. He previously served as a judge on the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas and as a judge on the 8th District Court of Appeals in Cuyahoga County.

The University of Akron School of Law was rated as the second “best value” juris doctorate public school program in the United States in the latest rankings of National Jurist and Prelaw Insider magazines, based on tuition, bar passage rates, employment rates, median grants, clinic slots and faculty-student ratio.
