Justice Maureen O'Connor of the Supreme Court of Ohio participated in a panel discussion on the topic of “Women in the Judiciary” Monday at the Shaker Heights Public Library, which is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the appointment of Sandra Day O'Connor, the first female to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Justice O'Connor was joined on the panel by Judge Patricia Ann Blackmon of the 8th District Court of Appeals in Cuyahoga County and Shaker Heights Municipal Court Judge K.J. Montgomery.
“I enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a healthy and forward-thinking discussion about the role of women in the legal profession, particularly in celebration of one of our country's greatest female leaders,” Justice O'Connor said. “Sandra Day O'Connor has been a public servant in many capacities and has broken many barriers for women.”
Justice O'Connor was elected in 2002 as the 148th Justice on the Supreme Court of Ohio and the seventh woman to serve on the Court. She has experience as a practicing attorney, magistrate, common pleas judge, and prosecuting attorney. In 1998, she was elected as lieutenant governor and was the governor's chief advisor on criminal justice issues, serving as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and as chair of Ohio's Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee.
The panel discussion, which focused on the status of women in the legal profession and judiciary, was part of a series of events the Shaker Heights Library is hosting around the theme “Healthy, Wealthy and Wise @ Shaker Library,” coinciding with the 300th anniversary of the birth of Ben Franklin. For a high resolution, publication-quality photo of Justice Maureen O'Connor, please click on the above photo or visit: http://www.supremecourtofohio.gov/Communications_Office/Press_Releases/images/justices/oconnor_highres.zip
