Supreme Court Releases Bench Cards for Family and Juvenile Court Judges and Magistrates

The Supreme Court of Ohio today released a new reference tool for the nearly 450 juvenile and family court judges and magistrates throughout Ohio.

The Dependency Docket Bench Cards were developed to support judicial officers in their duty to provide comprehensive and timely judicial action in child welfare cases and to support best practices. The Ohio-specific resources are not intended to serve as an authoritative source, but rather a resource to inform courtroom practice.

Designed to be easily accessible, the cards outline step-by-step hearing instructions, consistent and sound practices and state and federal guidelines for judges and magistrates to refer to as they conduct proceedings in dependency cases.

The bench cards stem from the “Beyond the Numbers” project, a collaborative initiative of the Supreme Court of Ohio and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services designed to improve the way courts and agencies and their community partners address child welfare cases. The cards are the result of the collaborative efforts of staff of the Supreme Court of Ohio, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and a number of volunteer judges, content drafters and editors.
