New RSS Feed Increases Public Access to Supreme Court News, Opinion Summaries

The Supreme Court of Ohio today announced that RSS feeds for Court news and opinion summaries are now available on its Web site, www.supremecourtofohio.gov. The new RSS feature is part of an ongoing effort by the Supreme Court and Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer to use information technology to increase public understanding of the judiciary.

“This most recent technological addition to the Supreme Court Web site is yet another important step in the Court's continuing efforts to make the judiciary more open and accessible to all citizens,” Chief Justice Moyer said.

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary, is a format used to deliver Web content directly to the user without the user having to repeatedly visit the Web site from which the content originates.

The feeds work by delivering Web information to RSS subscribers via an RSS reader. Subscribers then automatically receive the new material that has been posted to the site. Free desktop RSS readers are available for download from the Internet, and Web sites such as Google and Yahoo have RSS readers built into their sites that can be used by signing up.

To subscribe to Supreme Court RSS feeds, visit www.supremecourtofohio.gov, and click on the RSS Feed link on the right-hand side of the page, which features step-by-step instructions. A guide for using Google and Yahoo RSS readers is available on the Web site as well. After a new user subscribes to a feed, it can take up to a day for the first updates to arrive.

The Court's news RSS feed features the latest headlines and stories on Supreme Court administrative and programmatic news. The case RSS feed provides headlines and summaries of the Court's merit decisions with opinions.

Other recent public education and information initiatives at the Court include a redesign of the Court Web site, placing the case docket online, creating an online database of all Ohio attorneys and opening the Supreme Court of Ohio Visitor Education Center, which features interactive displays and exhibits to teach citizens about the role and function of the judiciary and the history of the Supreme Court. More information about the Visitor Education Center and the Court's historic home is available at: www.ohiojudicialcenter.gov.
